With the average auto loan term at 69 months for new vehicles and 65 months for used vehicles, auto finance collection strategies may be as important as ever. And even with longer loan terms, car buyers are falling behind in their payments. As reported in 2019, there were more than 7 million Americans with auto loans that were 90 or more days delinquent at the end of 2018. Loan payment collection is the top concern of most auto finance companies.

Below are 5 strategies that auto finance companies can use to improve collection of payments.

1. Utilize Data

Data may be the single biggest tool that finance companies have to improve payment collection rates. When a potential customer signs up for a loan, make sure your business has a standardized process in place to gather the necessary personal information you need from them and to verify that the information is valid and up-to-date. Many third-party loan software systems have integrations that can provide additional checks or verification of the loan applicant’s personal data. If you’re using GPS technology to help secure the asset, incorporate the data you receive into your analysis to segment accounts that may have missed payments or are late. Eventually, you’ll want to use all the data at your disposal to find accounts that need help before they become delinquent.

2. Utilize Technology

As with nearly every industry, technology is making auto finance collection easier. If you work for one of these companies, it’s important that you are continually evaluating new technology tools that can make collections process go more smoothly. We recommend using technology to automate processes where possible. This can not only free up your employees to take on more accounts, but also help keep things consistent and standardized, a key component of staying compliant with the law. Payment notifications are a perfect example. Using a payment notification technology can ensure your communication with customers is not only compliant but also consistent. GPS is another example of technology that can help improve collections.  We recommend choosing an automotive GPS provider that has the data and analytics built into their technology platform that will allow you to identify accounts that may be troublesome before they become delinquent.

3. Be Proactive

While it may seem obvious to anyone who’s ever worked in higher risk auto loans, don’t wait for the consumer to become delinquent before intervening. Typically, there are warning signs that a consumer may be having trouble making their payments. Late or partial payments, or changes in a customer’s communication frequency could be early warning signs.  The best way to reduce risk in this type of situation is to be proactive and get in contact with the customer in order to get an understanding of what is going on. Once you know what the problem is you can develop a strategy and take the appropriate action to get them back on track.

4. Use a More Human Approach

With all the technology and automation available to finance companies, human interaction and the use of a more personal approach to collection is often lost. Consumers can easily ignore phone calls, text, and emails from overly aggressive or harsh collection agents. Trying to use a more human approach and treating customers with compassion and respect will often result in better payment collection rates and less hostility and resentment between your business and its customers.

5. Make Sure Your Staff is Properly Trained

Making sure your staff has comprehensive and ongoing training in the latest collections tools and technology is one of the most effective auto finance collection strategies. Does everyone in your organization know how to access and use all the analytics tools available to them? Are they leveraging all of the GPS provider data and other technology in their workflow? Are your staff familiar with the compliance procedures? We recommend setting up periodic trainings, perhaps quarterly, as a refresher for the staff to go over existing policies and procedures and introduce new technology features or processes. Ensuring that your staff is properly trained will reduce issues and improve collections and profits.

As the size and length of auto loans continues to increase collections will become more challenging than ever.  While this certainly puts pressure on consumers, it also creates challenges for finance companies and credit unions. Having a strategy in place can help your business reduce delinquent payments and ensure more loans get paid on time.

PassTime offers GPS technology solutions that help auto finance companies and credit unions improve collections rates. Learn how we can help your business.

For used car and BHPH (Buy Here Pay Here) dealers and others in the subprime auto finance space, the use of GPS tracking devices has been around for decades. Like most technology, GPS tracking prices have come down significantly over the years.

Prices that were in the $300-$500 per device range ten years ago, are now often between $100-$200 or even lower, depending upon functionality and quality of the devices.

In addition to the hardware cost, there is typically a service or airtime package that is associated with the device that includes the wireless service with the carrier that allows the device to communicate as well as access to a device management portal and any available mobile apps. Often, the service package is bundled with the hardware upfront and simply needs to be renewed after the initial period is up.

While many BHPH and used car dealers choose providers based upon the quality and features of their GPS tracking systems, price is nearly always a significant factor when selecting a solution.

And while hardware and service package pricing are pretty straightforward, there is a cost that is often overlooked: installation.

Depending upon what type of business you are in, you may or may not have employees onsite that can install a GPS device. For BHPH dealers, most have service technicians that are able to install devices – for a price. Whether paying the service department directly or simply accounting for the time it takes to install a GPS device, the cost of installation is often overlooked when evaluating GPS products and providers.

PassTime’s revolutionary GPS solution, Encore, is changing pricing perceptions in the industry for BHPH dealers and subprime auto finance companies. Encore is wireless (as in no wires), self-powered through an advanced lithium metal battery and requires no installation.

Because the device does not need vehicle power to operate, there is no need to cut vehicle wires, splice, crimp, solder, tape and all the other aspects that typically go in to installing a GPS device. Encore’s portability allows it to be placed in the vehicle under the seat, in a headrest, or many other locations within minutes.

And while the battery-power aspect of Encore makes it simple and quick to use – it can create instant savings by eliminating the need to pay an in-house or third-party installer. By removing the installation cost associated with GPS tracking devices, Encore may result in savings of up to $50-$100 per vehicle.

As a self-powered GPS device that does not require installation, Encore is helping dealers and lenders save money and is changing price perceptions for BHPH dealers and subprime auto finance companies.  The often-overlooked cost of installing a GPS device is turning into real savings with Encore.

For PassTime, compliance has always been an important part of our business.  From its early days to today, the company has worked diligently to educate national and local government regulators, consumer advocates, dealers, finance companies and consumers on the functionality and consumer benefits of GPS and Payment Assurance devices.

PassTime, an industry leader in GPS Tracking and Automated Technology Solutions, began marketing the first industry Payment Assurance technology in 1997.  At that time, 70-80% of the market was held by two payment assurance device companies, PassTime and On-Time.  Within a year, PassTime began working on the industry’s first Payment Assurance consumer disclosures, in late 1998.

PassTime, an industry leader in device compliance and device disclosure, has teamed with Hudson Cook, one of the nation’s most highly regarded law practices in the area of consumer financial services law, to create the first available training in payment assurance and GPS device compliance.

PassTime has a full time compliance officer and CFPB Service Provider documentation. The April 2013 CFPB bulletin reiterated the Bureau’s expectation that supervised financial institutions have an effective process for managing the risks of service provider relationships.

PassTime strives to ensure corporate wide compliance with new and emerging State, Federal Laws and Regulations.  IT compliance is also an integral part of PassTime’s implementation of best computing and management practices.

GPS Device Best Practices: The Do’s & Don’t’s

The Do’s:

  • Do have written policies and procedures for the use of the devices, including (but not limited to) the bullet points listed below.
  • Do fully disclose to the customer that the device is on the vehicle as a condition of financing, how the device works, and optional emergency procedures.
  • Do give written disclosure to the End User Consumer of a SID/GPS device being installed on the vehicle and used as a condition of the extension of credit under the RISC.
  • Do have written disclosures that include language outlining the fact that the device is installed on the vehicle, how it operates and will be used, and both the End User Consumer’s and finance company’s/dealer’s/device owner’s respective obligations related to the device.
  • Do have the consumer sign the disclosure.
  • Do track complaints and complaint resolution related to the devices.
  • Do use trained and/or certified in-house, third-party, or vendor supplied installers.

The Don’t’s:

  • Don’t pass the cost of the devices, airtime or installation along to the consumer whose cars are to be equipped with the GPS or Payment Reminder devices associated to the RISC.
  • Don’t discriminate in any way who you require to have a device and who you don’t, as this may violate federal or state anti-discrimination laws.
  • Don’t disable a consumer’s vehicle without giving prior warning, if possible (prior warning is mandatory in California).
  • Don’t leave the vehicle disabled after a debtor makes an appropriate payment. Re-enable the vehicle as soon as possible.
  • Don’t use the GPS tracking functionality for any improper purpose.
